How a Wingdings translator works

Wingdings is a font, not a language or a cipher. In Microsoft Word, changing the font to Wingdings makes each key display a symbol. The letters stored underneath stay the same. This translator replaces each key with its Unicode character, using the symbol mappings completed with Unicode 7.0 in 2014. The result is ordinary text you can paste anywhere that accepts text. The reader does not need the Wingdings font, but their device needs glyphs for those Unicode characters.

Capitalization matters: uppercase A is โœŒ, while lowercase a is โ™‹. โ€œHelloโ€ becomes ๐Ÿ–—โ™โšซโšซ๐Ÿž with the standard mapping. The default iPhone-friendly option uses close look-alikes for some symbols.

How to translate English to Wingdings

  1. Choose English โ†’ Wingdings and type or paste your text. The empty box shows โ€œHello worldโ€ as an example.
  2. Pick Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 or Webdings. Spaces and line breaks stay in place. Accented letters, Chinese characters and emoji stay as typed.
  3. For Wingdings, leave iPhone-friendly look-alikes on for better Apple compatibility, or turn it off for the standard characters.
  4. Click the result or Copy, then paste it into your message or document.

How to decode Wingdings to English

  1. Choose Wingdings โ†’ English.
  2. Paste the symbols. If you are not sure which font was used, choose Detect font. It picks the font that recognizes the most symbols; a short message can be ambiguous.
  3. If the result does not read correctly, select the font yourself. It also reads text from other translators, which often add an invisible variation selector after each symbol, and the older look-alike symbols many of them use.
  4. Copy the decoded text. Symbols that the selected font does not recognize stay in the result.

A Word document is different: if its ordinary text is only displayed in the Wingdings font, the English is already there underneath. Select that text and switch its font to Arial or Calibri. You do not need a translator.

Microsoft assembled Wingdings from Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes's Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars designs. It has shipped with Windows since Windows 3.1. Type Solutions, Inc. developed Wingdings 2 and Wingdings 3; they were distributed with Microsoft Office through the 2010 release.

Microsoft's Vincent Connare designed Webdings. It first shipped with Internet Explorer 4.0 and has been included with Windows since Windows 98.

Why some Wingdings symbols show as boxes

Many Wingdings symbols did not enter the standard until Unicode 7.0. A device needs a font containing those characters to draw them. In October 2026, we tested each symbol on a Mac by comparing its canvas rendering with the system's missing-glyph box. Out of 94 keys per font, Wingdings had 36 missing glyphs; Wingdings 2 had 56 missing glyphs; Wingdings 3 had 66 missing glyphs; Webdings had 29 missing glyphs. We tested on a Mac; iPhones use the same Apple symbol fonts, so expect the same gaps there. On Oct 26, 2026, Edge on Windows 11 displayed all 94 keys in each of the 4 fonts using only system fonts. A Xiaomi Android 15 phone's built-in browser had the same gaps as the Mac, plus 9 more in Wingdings 3 and 4 more in Webdings, also using only system fonts. The iPhone-friendly option does not replace these extra symbols; it only changes Wingdings.

That is why Wingdings starts with iPhone-friendly look-alikes enabled. It replaces 17 missing symbols with similar characters Apple devices can draw. For example: S: ๐ŸŒข โ†’ ๐Ÿ’ง; o: ๐Ÿž โ†’ โ–ก; s: ๐ŸžŸ โ†’ โฌง. Some symbols still have no replacement; the status below the result counts them. Turn the option off to use the standard Unicode characters corresponding to the symbols in Word.

This page loads the open-source Noto Sans Symbols fonts for its results and charts, so you can see every mapped symbol here. The fonts do not come along when you copy. What appears after pasting depends on the receiving device and app.

Wingdings in Undertale and the "NYC" story

W. D. Gaster, a hidden character in Toby Fox's Undertale, uses Wingdings, including in the hidden Entry Number 17. Fans use translators to read these messages and write their own Gaster-style messages.

Within days of the Windows 3.1 release in 1992, people noticed that โ€œNYCโ€ in Wingdings became a skull and crossbones, a Star of David and a thumbs-up: ๐Ÿ•ฑโœก๐Ÿ‘. It was circulated as an antisemitic code. Microsoft denied that interpretation and said the arrangement of glyphs was largely arbitrary. In Webdings, released later, โ€œNYCโ€ is widely reported to have been mapped on purpose to an eye, a heart and a city skyline: ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ”๐Ÿ™, echoing โ€œI love New Yorkโ€.

For more than 40 other styles, try the fancy text generator. The upside down text tool flips text and turns it back, while the glitch text generator adds zalgo marks. For a secret alphabet from Minecraft, the enchanting table translator writes and reads the runes on the enchanting table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wingdings a real language?

No. Wingdings is a font, with one symbol assigned to each keyboard key. It has no grammar or vocabulary of its own, and it is not a secure cipher.

How do I translate Wingdings to English?

Choose Wingdings โ†’ English, paste the symbols and leave Detect font selected if you do not know the font. You can also select Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 or Webdings yourself. Unrecognized symbols stay as they are. In a Word document with ordinary letters displayed in the Wingdings font, simply change the font to Arial or Calibri.

Why do some Wingdings symbols show up as boxes?

The device needs a font containing each Unicode character. Our October 2026 Mac test found missing glyphs for 36 of the 94 Wingdings keys. The iPhone-friendly option swaps 17 of those for close look-alikes. This page loads its own symbol fonts, but those fonts do not travel with copied text.

Is Wingdings case sensitive?

Yes. Uppercase A becomes โœŒ, while lowercase a becomes โ™‹. Keep the original capitalization when encoding or decoding a message.

What is the difference between Wingdings and Webdings?

Wingdings dates to 1990 and includes everyday objects, hands, religious symbols and zodiac signs. Webdings arrived in 1997 with icons for websites, buildings, transport, weather and media controls. The same key gives different symbols in each font.

How do I type in Wingdings in Microsoft Word?

Select Wingdings in the font menu, then type. You can also select existing text and change its font to Wingdings. Results copied from this translator are Unicode symbols: they remain symbols regardless of the chosen font, provided the device has a font with the needed glyphs.

Can I write messages like W. D. Gaster?

Yes. Choose English โ†’ Wingdings and the Wingdings font, type a message, then copy it to Discord or another chat. Gaster uses Wingdings in Undertale. Some symbols may need the iPhone-friendly look-alikes option to display on your friend's device.
