Glitch Text Generator
Turn any word into creepy zalgo or cursed text, set how strong it is and where the marks go, or clean glitchy text back up.
Glitch text · 11 → 78 characters · X counts 78 of 280
Heads-up: screen readers can read every mark aloud, and strong glitch text spills over the lines above and below it. Keep names people need to type or search for in plain text.
What is glitch text?
Glitch text looks like a screen that is breaking up: letters with jagged marks piled on top, slicing through and dripping underneath. It is ordinary text, not an image. Unicode has a set of combining marks (accents, hooks, tildes and lines) that attach to the letter in front of them, and nothing stops several of them being stacked on one letter. A glitch text generator adds a random handful after every letter, so the word underneath stays the same and can still be copied, pasted and, at low intensity, read.
How to make glitch text
- Type your word, name or sentence. Until you do, the result shows “Glitch text”.
- Pick a preset or drag the intensity slider. Higher means more marks on each letter.
- Choose where the marks go: Above, Through, Below, or any mix. Marks only above look like the letters are rising; only below looks like they are melting.
- Press Re-roll until you like the shape, then copy and paste it.
Intensity levels
Every level below was generated by the same code as the tool, on the word “glitch” with marks in all three directions. The last column is how many characters the six letters turn into.
| Level | Above | Through | Below | Example | Characters | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 0–1 | 1 | ġ̦l̜̐i̺̋t̯͌c̝̋ẖ̵̔ | 19 | Names and bios: a light shiver that stays readable |

Marks that slice through a letter are capped at a few per letter at most, because a stack of crossing lines turns into a solid smudge. For a single clean line through each letter, the strikethrough text generator is the better tool.
Zalgo text
Zalgo is the name of an internet horror meme, and text broken up like this came to be called zalgo text after it. A zalgo text generator and a glitch text generator do the same job; the Zalgo preset (intensity 4, all three directions) gives the look most people mean, readable but clearly wrong.
Cursed text
Cursed text pushes the same idea to the limit: the Cursed preset (intensity 9) adds up to 9 marks above and 9 below every letter. Keep it to a word or two. A whole sentence at that strength becomes a tall block that covers the chat around it and uses up hundreds of characters.
Clean up glitch text
Got a message or a username full of zalgo you cannot read? Switch the tool to Clean glitch text and paste it. It removes every combining mark from the main Unicode mark blocks, not only the ones this page adds, and leaves letters, numbers and emoji alone. For example, the intensity 4 version of “glitch text” comes back as “glitch text” after 68 marks are removed. Accented letters typed the normal way, such as é and ñ, are kept, and only the marks piled on top of them go.
Character limits on each platform
Glitch marks are invisible characters in their own right, so they count against length limits. The table only states what each platform documents, with a link to the page (read on 7 Oct 2026). Where we have not pasted glitch text into the app ourselves, it says Untested.
| Where | Limit | Glitch marks | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 | Each mark counts as 1, so “glitch text” at intensity 4 counts as 80 | X Docs: Counting characters |
| Discord message | 2,000 (4,000 with Nitro) | Untested | Discord: Account Caps, Server Caps, and More |
| Discord display name | 32 | Untested | Discord: New Usernames & Display Names |
| Instagram bio and captions | Not checked | Untested | None yet |
| TikTok bio and comments | Not checked | Untested | None yet |
X's rule comes from its open-source counting library, which weighs every character from U+0000 to U+10FF as 1. All the marks this page adds sit in that range, so the X count under the tool result is exact for glitch text without links. For Discord name fields and the styles that display well there, see the Discord fonts page.

Common mistakes
- Glitching a whole paragraph. It becomes unreadable and takes up several times the space. Glitch one word and leave the rest plain.
- Using it where people must type your name. Friends cannot search for a glitched name or type it to mention you. Keep the plain version in your username and the glitch in a display name or bio.
- Forgetting about screen readers. Each mark can be read out one by one, which makes a short word take a long time to hear.
- Maxing out in a shared chat. Strong glitch text spills over other people's messages. Use a lower level, or marks in one direction only.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between glitch text, zalgo text and cursed text?
They are the same trick at different strengths. Glitch text usually means a light, flickering look; zalgo text, named after an internet horror meme, is letters buried in marks that spread above and below; cursed text is the extreme version, stacked so high it climbs over the lines around it. On this page they are the Light glitch, Zalgo and Cursed presets, and the intensity slider moves between them.
How do I remove zalgo text that someone sent me?
Switch the tool to Clean glitch text and paste it. Every combining mark is stripped from the letters, and the plain words come back. Normal accents such as é or ñ are kept when the text does not look glitched; if a light glitch leaves a stray accent behind, untick Keep normal accents.
Why does my glitch text cover the messages above and below?
The marks are drawn outside the normal height of a line, and most apps do not clip them. The higher the intensity, the further they reach. If it gets in the way, lower the intensity, or switch off Above or Below so the marks only grow in one direction.
Why is my post too long after adding glitch marks?
Each mark is a separate character. X counts every one of them toward the 280 limit, according to its own documentation, so a short sentence at high intensity can fill a post on its own. The counter under the result shows the character count and the X count before you copy.
Why do some marks show up as dotted circles or boxes?
The device has no font that can draw that mark on top of the letter, so it shows a placeholder instead. The marks used here come from the basic Combining Diacritical Marks block, which current phones and computers support, but older devices and some games may still struggle.
Is the result random every time?
It is random, but repeatable: the same text and settings give the same result, so it does not change while you copy it. Press Re-roll to shuffle the marks for a new version with the same intensity and directions.
