Gothic Font Generator

Turn a name, motto or team number into ๐”Š๐”ฌ๐”ฑ๐”ฅ๐”ฆ๐”  Old English letters, then check it in large type before you copy.

Fraktur has no numbers, so digits are swapped for bold math digits or left plain.

Shapes come from your device's font; a tattoo artist will redraw them, so treat this as a layout check.

How to use the gothic font generator

A surname on a jersey, a phrase for a tattoo and a pub sign need different spacing. Start with the words you actually plan to use, then compare the eight treatments before settling on one.

  1. Enter your wording in the box, or choose Name, Tattoo, Jersey or Sign to explore a ready-made example. The starting name is Isabella Grace.
  2. Choose bold or plain numbers. Press Preview beside a treatment to enlarge it below, and switch Light or Dark to inspect the outline against each background.
  3. Press the result row or its Copy button, then paste into your destination. Long entries have shortened cards; copying still includes the complete entry, as does the large panel.

Gothic, blackletter, Fraktur and Old English: one look, four names

Blackletter is an umbrella for the compact, angular hands used in European manuscripts and early printing from roughly the twelfth through seventeenth centuries. Different regions developed different branches. Gutenberg's Bible used textura, as the Library of Congress describes. Fraktur became particularly associated with German-speaking regions and continued in use into the twentieth century. Narrow strokes, broken curves and elaborate capitals make these letters recognizable today.

What an Old English font generator gives you

In English-speaking countries, โ€œOld Englishโ€ often names this visual style; Old English Text MT is a typeface example. The name does not mean the Old English language of Anglo-Saxon England, whose manuscripts used insular hands. This generator selects Unicode mathematical Fraktur letters, making the result transferable through a clipboard without installing a font file. Typographers also use โ€œgothicโ€ for sans-serif designs such as Century Gothic and Franklin Gothic; those are a separate meaning.

The gothic alphabet, regular and bold

Compare both cases side by side. Old English (Fraktur) has finer strokes; Bold Gothic adds weight. Bold Initials combines them by giving the first letter of each whitespace-separated word the heavier treatment, while keeping its original case. Marked capitals in the middle column have a different Unicode address.

Five letters Unicode keeps somewhere else

The apparent gaps are intentional. When Unicode 3.1 added Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols in 2001, it reserved five uppercase Fraktur positions because their equivalents already existed in Letterlike Symbols by Unicode 1.1. The Unicode 3.1 specification explains why older symbols were reused instead of encoded twice. Their earlier dates can be checked in the character age data.

Iโ„‘U+2111U+1D50C
Rโ„œU+211CU+1D515
Zโ„จU+2128U+1D51D

These were mathematical symbols before they became decorative letters: โ„‘ and โ„œ denote the imaginary and real parts of a complex number, while โ„Œ commonly denotes a Hilbert space. The Letterlike Symbols chart records those uses. The split has four practical consequences:

  • Your device may draw these five capitals from a different design, so their weight can vary from their neighbors.
  • A converter that merely adds a letter index to the starting code point can produce empty slots and visible boxes. This tool supplies the older characters.
  • Bold Fraktur contains all 52 uppercase and lowercase letters in one continuous sequence, avoiding these gaps.
  • Digits have no Fraktur counterpart. Bold math digits give jersey numbers and years more visual weight; Plain keeps their familiar everyday shapes.

Where gothic letters work best

  • Tattoos: enlarge a name or motto and compare its spacing. Double-check spelling yourself, including accents, before sending the copied reference to your artist. They will redraw it for the planned placement; a phone preview cannot establish the final stroke width or how the tattoo will age.
  • Jerseys and team names: Spaced Bold Gothic separates the letters across a banner or chest. Try the Jersey example, then switch digits to see whether the number needs the same visual weight. Check the whole team name rather than judging an isolated capital.
  • Signs, invitations and certificates: these reward careful typesetting. For a printed result, an actual blackletter font file offers better control of spacing and letter combinations. The open-source UnifrakturMaguntia is one option. Use this page to settle the wording and general silhouette first.
  • Social profiles: a short name or bio heading can carry the style without overwhelming the details. Check the biography layout on Instagram fonts, or explore nickname and message options on Discord fonts. TikTok profiles are another place to try it; verify acceptance in the exact field you edit.
  • Band and album names: compare a plain Fraktur title with fleurons or the star frame. Leave room around a short name so its letter shapes remain distinct when the cover becomes a small thumbnail.

To recover ordinary letters, the bold text generator includes Back to plain text. For a flowing alternative, compare the cursive font generator; the fancy text generator offers other families alongside blackletter.

Keep blackletter readable

Resist a line of capitals. Blackletter capitals were traditionally used as initials rather than strung together: their flourishes compete when packed into an all-caps word. A short title, surname or label works better than a full paragraph. Give the surrounding explanation ordinary letters and enough breathing room.

Assistive software may announce individual characters as mathematical Fraktur letters, sometimes with names like โ€œmathematical fraktur capital G,โ€ making a sentence laborious to hear. Keep contact details, URLs and essential instructions in ordinary characters. Search engines and an app's find function may not match these symbols to the equivalent typed letters, so retain a plain version of anything people need to locate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gothic, blackletter and Old English fonts?

Blackletter describes the family of dense, angular European lettering. Fraktur belongs to that family, and English speakers often label its appearance Gothic or Old English. An Old English font generator usually offers this decorative look; it does not translate your words into the Anglo-Saxon language.

Why do C, H, I, R and Z look slightly different from the other letters?

Their regular Fraktur characters occupy the older Letterlike Symbols block. A device can draw them using a different font from the surrounding mathematical letters, creating a small change in weight or proportions. The five positions in the later Fraktur sequence remain empty; Bold Gothic has a complete alphabet there.

How do I write numbers in a gothic font?

There is no Fraktur numeral set in Unicode. Numbers: Bold substitutes the separate mathematical bold digits, which suit a team number or established date. Plain 123 preserves ordinary digits across all eight rows, even the Bold Gothic row. The choice also applies to the large preview and copied text.

Can I use this gothic font generator for a tattoo?

Use the large panel to compare a name or phrase on light and dark backgrounds. Check spelling and send the lettering to your artist as a reference. Your screen supplies its own glyph shapes; the artist will redraw the design and judge stroke thickness, spacing and placement for skin.

Will gothic letters work in my Instagram or Discord name?

A display name, nickname or biography may accept them, while account handles can enforce a smaller character set. Try a short version in the actual field and inspect the saved result. If a letter becomes a box or the app rejects it, choose ordinary lettering for that field.

Is this the same as fonts like Century Gothic?

Century Gothic and Franklin Gothic are sans-serif typefaces with different shapes from blackletter. Gothic has both meanings in typography. This page follows the manuscript-inspired meaning and produces regular or bold Fraktur characters rather than either of those installed typefaces.

How do I turn gothic text back into normal letters?

Open the bold text generator page on this site and use Back to plain text. That control restores regular and bold Fraktur letters, the five older symbols, and mathematical bold digits to ordinary characters. Decorative frames and spacing remain, so remove those yourself if you need a completely plain line.
